Agents that think ahead. And keep going.
A look at the native AIOS agent runtime and the work behind longer, traceable workflows.
Beyond a single response
A useful task rarely ends after one response. It needs sources, tools, intermediate results and sometimes a question. AIOS keeps that work together in a flow.
Longer work needs a clear relationship between the brief, progress and result. In a research task with several parts, for example, it matters which documents have been reviewed, where information is missing and how conclusions were reached. The runtime keeps status, events and approvals linked to the task. That makes the execution history accessible; a good brief also explains the intended outcome.
A runtime for work in progress
Our native Rust runtime coordinates agent execution. Status, events and approvals remain linked to the task. Improvements in August and September focus on background work, speed and clearer error states.
Plan long tasks around reviewable intermediate results. Ask for a source review first, a draft next and a check against the original goal at the end. This is a way to organize work, not a promise of automatic recovery. If a run is interrupted or reports an error, inspect its current state and any changes already made before starting another attempt.
AIOSApprovals belong in the workflow
Autonomy works best within clear boundaries. When an action needs a decision, AIOS presents approval in the context of the work. The team can review it before the agent continues.
Background work changes when review happens; it does not replace review. After a longer task, a team still needs to understand what was produced and where a decision is needed. Ask for a concise handoff with sources, unresolved points and a clear next step. That makes it possible to continue from the result without rereading the entire conversation.
The outcome matters
Our goal is a useful outcome: preparation, a document, a traceable change. The runtime should support the work needed to get there.
Try it yourself
Adapt the placeholders to your task. This example is a template for your work with AIOS.
Work on [task] using [sources] toward [concrete outcome].
Organize the work into:
1. Review sources and identify missing information.
2. Draft the requested artifact.
3. Check the artifact against the goal and sources.
Finish with:
- The result and its location, where available.
- Sources used.
- Changes actually made, if included in the brief.
- Open questions or pending decisions.
- A concrete next step.
If you cannot continue, describe the current state and why. Do not present unfinished work as complete.Situations during longer agent work
| Observed situation | Useful review step |
|---|---|
| Work is still in progress. | Review the status and available intermediate results against the goal. |
| A decision is needed. | Read the proposed action and its effect in the run’s context. |
| An error or interruption is visible. | Establish what has already been produced or changed before starting again. |
| A result is available. | Review sources, completeness and remaining open points. |
